What it’s about and how to reward yourself for being a family caregiver
In the month of November, 50 million Americans receive recognition during National Family Caregivers Month. An estimated $306 billion are saved because of family members who take care of frail, disabled or chronically ill loved ones. President Obama gave this official proclamation: “We reflect on National Family Caregivers Month as a time of compassion and dedication seen in family members who embody these ideals. During this month, we offer our admiration and appreciation for their difficult work.”
Home Care Assistance of Las Vegas also wants to offer our support and praise. We know firsthand how time consuming in-home care can be, but we also thoroughly understand the rewards associated with ensuring an elderly adult is able to maintain their dignity, independence and quality of life in the comfort of their own home.
Each year, the month of November gets sponsored by the National Family Caregivers Association, also referred to as NFCA. The month places focus on the challenges family caregivers face as they strive to support an elderly loved one’s emotional, physical, social and mental health while juggling financial responsibilities and usually running multiple households.
A family caregiver may provide assistance for their loved one at a length of anywhere from a few years to a lifetime. Suzanne Mintz, president of the National Family Caregivers Association, says that NFC Month gives people an opportunity to advocate for public policies that ease the lives of family caregivers.
