How to Keep Seniors Safe from the Summer Heat

The hot Nevada desert climate can become a nuisance for most adults when summer comes around, but this weather can actually be dangerous for those over 65. Because of this, seniors need ways they can stay cool to prevent heat stroke and exhaustion. The staff at Home Care Assistance, a trusted provider of in-home care in Las Vegas, has a few suggestions.

Shop Indoors

When companies want to attract customers during the summer months, they tend to turn their air conditioning as low as possible. If you and your loved one have any errands to run, slowly meandering through a large chain store or mall is a great way to keep cool. Seniors who want to get off their feet and enjoy cool temperatures during the hottest parts of the day can catch a midday movie.

Encourage Swimming Instead of Walking

Brisk walks can help seniors elevate their heart rates and burn some calories, but exercising outdoors can be impractical during the summer. As an alternative, your loved one can explore water exercises such as pool aerobics and aqua fitness routines. Older adults who still want to walk or hike should only exercise during the earliest morning hours or well after the sun has gone down.

Prevent a Burnt Scalp

Seniors with thinning hair and bald patches have a high risk of burning the tops of their heads, which can lead to a variety of serious medical issues like hyperthermia. Though sunscreen partially blocks the sun’s rays, your loved one should invest in a good hat, ideally one with a brim wide enough to cover the face, neck, and shoulders.

Create a Cool Space

Even with an efficient AC system, spending all day in an upstairs bedroom can result in unusual temperature fluctuations and muggy air. One way to combat this is to set up a single room in the home that will remain as cool as possible. This room should have a vent close to the AC system and be shaded from the sun for most of the day.
