5 Ways to Get Ready for National Senior Health and Fitness Day

Some aging adults need extra motivation and focus to stay healthy and fit. May 25th is National Senior Health and Fitness Day, and many local organizations will hold events with activities specifically designed to promote elderly health. Las Vegas home care experts have 5 suggestions to help your senior loved one start getting into better shape and boost his or her health even before this event.

1. Get Screened for Diabetes

This is one of the most common diseases in the world, with over 26 percent of the senior population now diagnosed with either diabetes or prediabetes. Even if your loved one appears healthy, his or her body might still have a difficult time regulating glucose levels. If your loved one has not been screened for diabetes within the last year, schedule a full blood test for him or her as soon as possible.

2. Schedule an Eye Exam

Most optometrists agree seniors should have an eye exam at least once a year. Glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration are all major concerns for adults over 65, which can result in permanent eye damage if not treated immediately. While most of this exercise should be aerobic activities like swimming and walking, your loved one should also try to activate his or her larger muscle groups 2-3 times a week.
